Buyers Guide - Supima® vs Egyptian Cotton

Supima® is a licensed trademark that denotes items manufactured with 100% Pima cotton, grown exclusively in the American west and southwest. It is often referred to as ‘the cashmere of cottons’ as it surpasses other cottons in softness, strength and brilliance of colour. Supima® is a premium brand. Sheets that display the Supima® trademark guarantee exceptional quality that is hard to beat.

Softness

A Longer Staple Length

The staple length of Supima® is 35% longer than regular cottons. This increases softness and lustre. Fewer fibre ends are exposed, minimising the effects of abrasion resulting in less pilling.

Strenght

A Stronger Fibre

Supima® is up to 45% stronger than regular cottons. This makes Supima® products extraordinarily resilient. Even lighter-weight Supima® fabrics are incredibly durable, without compromising drape and comfort.

Colour

A Vibrant Fibre

Supima® absorbs and retains colour better than regular cottons. This means that Supima® products retain their brilliance over many years of use.

Supima® vs Egyptian Cotton

These two cottons have much to boast in quality of weave and excellent durability but there are some subtle differences. All cotton grown in Egypt is “Egyptian” but not necessarily ELS (extra long staple) cotton. Many brands claim ‘Egyptian Cotton’ but this is no guarantee of ELS, as these days, ‘Egyptian’ is a generic term for ELS - it doesn’t necessarily mean it is genuine extra long staple Egyptian cotton. Egyptian cotton can also be of lower quality long staple cotton fibres or may be made of a mixture of different quality fibres. Supima®, unlike Egyptian cotton, is grown exclusively in a small area so it can guarantee ELS cotton on all its products, making Supima® the cotton of choice for the discerning buyer.

Easy Care

Supima® sheet sets can be machine washed and tumble dried. Supima® is durable and will improve with regular washing, enhancing its luxurious softness.
